Math
Students work at their own pace, using the University
of Chicago Math series or customized remedial
skill-based activities. Each lesson incorporates
review of basic skills, problem solving, and direct
teaching of concepts. Students work one-on-one or in
small group lessons as needed.
Science
The Arbor Montessori Junior High School science curriculum is
diverse and covers an array of topics with the aim of
providing an introduction to the wide variety of
sciences as well as a base of knowledge in many areas.
Geology, astronomy, laws of motion, weather and
climate, ecosystems, plants and animals, atmosphere,
energy, and oceanography are all subjects integrated
into the science curriculum. The eighth grade
curriculum rounds out the middle school base of
knowledge and focuses on chemistry, physics, biology,
and earth science. Students also attend health
classes, which focus on the human body, the different
systems within the body, and how to take care of your
own body.
Language
The language curriculum consists of Seminar and
Writer's Workshop, level appropriate spelling and
vocabulary, as well as grammar (parts of speech,
sentence analysis, skill lessons), and word study
(root words, homonyms, etc.). Novels, short stories,
and poems read are related directly to the Humanities unit being
studied. Seminar involves discussion of theme, plot,
character development, etc. The Writer's Workshop
involves several activities: skill lessons (spelling
and punctuation, style/form), the writing process/peer
editing sessions, as well as creative writing.
