Online Programs

Primary and Elementary Online Program

In addition to our in school options this year Arbor is offering online Montessori programs. One program will service students 6 to 12 years of age and the other is for children in our primary programs. While we agree that students should spend as little time in front of screens as possible, a global pandemic has put us in a position to recognize that safety for some means that screen time is unavoidable. In preparing our program we endeavored to keep true to our Montessori roots and make as much of our program available offline while keeping open student communication and connection with their teachers and peers. The following is the outline of our program, more detail will be filled in as we approach the beginning of the school year.

Material lists will be provided as soon as possible. There will be options to purchase necessary materials from the school directly, through recommended vendors, through second hand shops, or by making some of the Montessori materials. We will also let you know what technological capabilities your student will need in terms of participating online in the most meaningful way.

Parents, or caregivers, are an integral part of our online program and thus are the primary participants the first week of school, and have an ongoing obligation to keep abreast of school communication. The first week of school will look like this:

Monday: Montessori Philosophy and Structure of Environment. For primary families this will be a parent only hour long discussion of previously assigned readings and the reflections submitted thereon. For elementary families the students will join the discussion to help lend their perspective on how what they have experienced in the classroom can be replicated in their home.

Tuesday: Organizing the Learning Environment. Equipped with the materials procured over the summer, each family, having read the provided materials, will share the reasoning they applied in creating the learning space they will be using for the fall. This is primarily a parent activity with student input as necessary. This is also a time to recognize that the environment is fluid and will change as the students become acclimated to their new learning environment. Time will be spent discussing the daily schedule and how each student can be best supported in their quest for success.

Wednesday: Lessons on Using Online tools. This is an opportunity for both parents and students to discover and become somewhat familiar with the learning tools that will be available throughout the online learning sessions. Parents will see how to assess progress daily. Students will see how to access databases, move into and out of breakout rooms, turn in assignments, scan work, and switch between programs or platforms. This will culminate with the children accessing their Thursday assignments.

Thursday: The day will begin with a circle, followed by the parents receiving a lesson on student overview in the online environment while the student chooses to work independently or in a breakout room.

Friday: Dress rehearsal. We start our typical day of work with the students receiving lessons, and choosing and performing their work, while parents provide overview in the manner discussed Thursday.

Friday evening: Virtual Happy Hour, evening time to be determined, a time to celebrate the start of school and reflect on how dress rehearsal went. This will continue on a monthly basis to provide sufficient adult communication to foster community as well as program integrity.
