Toddler Program Overview

Arbor’s Toddler Program is comprised of 2 classrooms. Each environment has 14 students and 3 faculty members who make up their classroom community.  A mixed-age program, students range from 15 months to 3 years old.

Each classroom is thoughtfully prepared with four essential elements: people, tools, ideas, and nature. This supports children’s physical, cognitive, emotional, and social development. In the Toddler program, this environment is designed to foster independence, body awareness, and emotional security.

Toddlers begin with a gentle “slow start” transition, attending with a caregiver for several days as they learn that the classroom is a safe and nurturing space. As they gain confidence, children build attachments with classroom adults and begin practicing daily routines such as changing shoes, putting belongings away, and enjoying snack.

Snack time is an important learning experience, offering opportunities to practice independence, coordination, self-regulation, and care for others. Throughout the day, toddlers choose from developmentally appropriate work that encourages exploration and discovery. Teachers observe closely and introduce new materials as each child shows readiness, allowing learning to unfold naturally.

Social interaction is woven into the day through lessons in grace and courtesy, rich language exposure, and emotional vocabulary. Group experiences such as circle time introduce early literacy, numeracy, movement, music, and listening skills.

Outdoor play, lunch, rest, and afternoon work provide additional opportunities for self-care, cooperation, and independence. Through these daily rhythms, toddlers develop confidence, self-regulation, and foundational life skills that prepare them for the transition to the Primary program.
